How to Become Accredited

IACAB accepts applications from conformity assessment bodies around the world. These are the general steps that apply.

  1. Enquiry and application

Application forms are available from IACAB on request. Submit the completed application with all supporting documents and the non-refundable application fee. IACAB acknowledges the application and requests any further information or clarification needed.

  2. Document and record review

A competent Lead Assessor appointed by IACAB reviews the application and supporting documents against the relevant standard and issues a detailed feedback report. The applicant takes corrective action on any deficiencies within the specified period (two to six months).

  3. Pre-assessment

The Lead Assessor or assessment team verifies that documented procedures are in place and issues a detailed feedback report. Deficiencies must be corrected within the specified period.

  4. Initial assessment

The final assessment for the grant of accreditation, conducted by IACAB assessors and/or technical experts, including on-site assessment and witnessing of the applicant's activities at client premises where applicable.

  5. Submission of corrective actions

The applicant submits objective evidence of corrective actions within six months. After six months, a fresh application with related documents is required and an additional processing fee applies. This applies at every stage involving corrective action.

  6. Recommendation by the assessment team

The assessment team makes a recommendation to the Accreditation Approval Committee regarding the grant of accreditation.

  7. Grant of accreditation

If the Accreditation Approval Committee is satisfied with the recommendation, accreditation is granted. If not, the applicant is told the reasons, and a further application may be considered later.

After accreditation

Once accredited, a body is subject to regular surveillance to confirm ongoing compliance with the accreditation criteria, including witnessing of a sample of its auditors and inspectors. A complete reassessment takes place at the end of each accreditation cycle.

The surveillance programme and reassessment cycle are set out in the IACAB accreditation manual, available to all applicant and accredited bodies.
